I didn't make it all the way up but it was a fun and scenic day. Lots of flowers, met a Brahma bull in a narrow section. He musta not been feeling good as I got to within 5 feet of him before he put his head down and turned to face me. Even then it was half hearted.
Wonderful rock and geology. The canyon is not narrow but goes through different bedding planes that create short mini narrows, some with pretty pools. Cattle trails are a godsend in spots with the catclaw and cactus, if you get tired of endless rockhopping, and have to bypass some spots which require strenuous scrambling.
A short way up there is a cairned trail, crossing the drainage, put in place by the owner of a small plot abutted up next to the wilderness. I have been told this trail will get you up to Grassy Peak area.
Also lots of lizards, too quick for pics. Several large alcoves. One had some genuine looking pictographs, however one seemed more modern---Spanish, perhaps.
Past the beautiful "blue pool"--complete with a large oak tree growing out of rock and a little beach---it was traveling through house sized boulders and a bunch of brush for a while. Here I got hot and tired, ate my lunch and turned around. Stunning cliffs and colors here.
While obviously not a route for horse or a main travel route in and out of the Galiuros it's a spectacular canyon worth the hard work. |
