| no partners | | This area is a little prettier than I thought it would be or photograph. Lots of prospects. Currently the Yellow Jacket mine proper is being worked. Near the current workings are stone foundations and some adits and shafts. This area mining dates from the 1800's. I would bring a HC vehicle for this little trip, and some good tires.
I saw several deer, and got into one good sized drift of several hundred feet, a main tunnel and several tunnels running off then paralleling the main tunnel. The thing had been flooded at one time. Saw some bats in this one. Another tunnel got me in trouble, it was either a trash dump for the mine or for the drug runners in the area. I was walking carefully on hundreds of bags covering the floor when out popped a skunk. I turned away but got a little of the spray. My clothes are sitting outside in a garbage bag as I write this. I have a horrible sense of smell and sinus problems so pursued the little devil and got some pictures. When I went outside to get in the Jeep got a whiff of myself so luckily has some spare clothing in the car so changed. TOPO indicated some caves in the area. The area is in mudstone. I didn't find them so I either didn't get far enough or look hard enough. I was now in shorts and the catclaw made my legs look like hamburger raw so I wasn't too motivated. I did walk a nice ridgeline with nice views. I passed thru a spring area then by a sizable mine just before the loop ended. I drove on back, and fortuitously located another good way into the Cerro Colorado, noticing a huge alcove looking thing on the western side I had not seen before, maybe not the right light.
Sigh---it just never ends. |
