It was after eight when my intrepid party of three left the trailhead, and we finished the last 2 to 2-1/2 miles in the dark.
Probably the best part of the trail for me was between Fremont Saddle and the Dutchman-Boulder Canyon junction. There's a lot of interesting geology and it must be awesome in spring, judging from the amount of globe mallow and other spring-flowering plants I saw. The Peralta trail passes through an area that was hit by fire long enough ago that the burnt skeletons of plants have healthy green growth shooting out of their bases.
We lost light south of the Boulder Canyon-Second Water junction, just as we gained the first saddle where you can see the Lake. Managing the rest of the twisty trail with nothing but two headlamps was an adventure I don't want to repeat. The three of us decided to come back to Canyon Lake some other time, just so we can actually see the last few miles we hiked! |
