We stayed at Greer Lodge down the road (much busier this year post '11 fire). Gave husband some time to sleep in while I took two little ones in the double BOB on a jog up and down Main Street early morning. Stopped at East Fork trail access area about two inlets before the end of the road. Two big logs placed across LCR to get to actual trail that goes up and over mini-mountain type hill.

Kids were in their pajamas but with boots on top. They found rocky spots in the river to sit and dig in the mud and rocks using broken tree bark tools and their grubby toddler hands. Caroline (3 yrs old) named one good spot "sandy island" and she stood there to watch the recently stocked trout swimming in the few inches high water (with me wondering why we didn't bring a net). She had a baggie to collect nature samples of flowers and stuff to identify back at the cabin with our nature books. George (17 months old) can say about 40 or 50 words - and luckily "flower" :budrose: is one of those words. He was on a flower word binge all weekend. I have not seen the wildflowers so dense and so diverse in this area that I can remember since we've been coming back to 2005. Not sure if it's been extra rainy or post-fire recovery - but wildflowers were awesome.

We came back the four of us on the 18th with rented bikes at sunset and watched 5 deer walk toward us until George let out a big yelp and they bolted up the mountain. Two years ago we hiked a good portion of this trail, but this year I couldn't get past the river itself with these two mud-lovers.
