I had been searching for a reliable water source in the lower reaches of the far backside of the Huachuca Mountains for some time now. This would be a location that didn't take Parker Canyon Lake into account. I'd been eyeballing 'Mud Spring' in the foothills of Lone Mountain via TOPO and Google Earth and decided to finally take a look see... This hike isn't the greatest in the area - but does get better the further you go - with the upper reaches and last quarter mile being just wonderful I thought. Mud Spring is actually a Conservation Area for the reintroduction of the Chiricahuan Leopard Frog, and is thus surrounded by a Bullfrog proof fence. The road is definitely High Clearance 4x4 - with the first portion (1/4 mile) north of FR 61 making that clear! I chose a TH about a quarter of a mile off the main road. The trail I took makes use of the western fork in the main road - the eastern fork will get you there just the same - as this route is a nice easy loop if you like. The water available at Mud Spring is both reliable year round & superb - a real find in this outback location!

Water seeping over the birm @ < Quart+ per min. This location is actually a 60' x 50' oval pond (several thousand gallons) with water pumped to a nearby new (clean) tank. The water available at Mud Spring is both reliable year round & superb - a real find in this outback location!
