It had been over twenty years since I had made way to the Stronghold area on the eastern slope of the Dragoon Mountains. So much would have changed - of that I was fairly certain - and yet the essence I was confident would remain unaffected by the score of years that had past. Upon arrival to the Cochise Campground TH (closed June - August as a campground) - as I would have guessed - the Disneyfication of 'Cochise' had been well established - being made brief, palatable and easy to digest... None of this was here before of course, and most of the nearby housing / ranch additions between the campground all the way east toward Pearce didn't exist as well. I can remember when it was a long stretch of cold winter road via the town of Dragoon, with a red-tailed hawk on nearly every other telephone pole, etc. Just desolate - Days of Future Past - my initial outing to the Dragoons was an off-trail backpacking overnighter in late December 1989 spent up topside around Rockafellow Dome. A brief log entry is here: http://hikearizona.com/triplog=74415

The day was HOT, and I picked my turn-around ahead of the Divide based upon an incoming Chubasco that was getting too close for Solo hiking so remote...I hope to return to the Goons this weekend for an extended 4x4 trek with Tresa.

Definitely on the < 5% side of things - don't count on finding any easy H2O in the upper-Goons these days.

dry Johns Well Dry Dry
Shockingly dry for the season...it seems that the Dragoons are receiving less rainfall than the surrounding area.
