I found 5 or 6 ruins in this Rosalie Mine / Hackberry Wash area. Lots of pottery shards and stone walls - some impressive ones - but I didn't notice any petroglyphs or bedrock metates - I guess these folks ate take-out. The main ruin, located about halfway up the hillside, stands out as the most impressive one I've seen in this area both in size and preservation. (It's still more rubble than anything else though.)
I continued up the hill and gained the ridge hoping I'd find some petroglyphs or other habitation signs along the way. No luck though, of course the high grass didn't help. Once on the ridge I kept going and passed a few high points, the most prominent labeled 4919. The ridge more or less dead ended and I decided to backtrack and drop into Brooklyn Basin. (I had also considered heading to Brooklyn Peak but that looked like too much work.)
I passed a couple prominent ruins in Brooklyn Basin as well as some evidence of mining and later habitation. I walked the jeep road out of the bottom of the basin back to the flat part of Perry Mesa, past the mesa cluster of Brooklyn ruins and completed the loop using roads with some cut corners. |
