This is now my official "go to" when nature throws some amazing elements my way and I don't know if it will turn for the worst. AKA a safe bet. The trail head is easily accessible, the trail isn't terribly difficult, and the views are ENDLESS. Pound for pound this is a top 10 for me. Angel falls flows off of Wilson and was our original destination. That is now 5 times that Angel Falls messed with my brain! This wasn't the storm to get that baby flowing, however, when we realized that fact, we returned to the Brins trail via 6 inch of snow bushwhack through thickets of manzanita and juniper. Up onto the mesa! The new destination was "the tree" http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=172254 and up we climbed. The ground was, as I stated while hiking, "sweet potatoes" being its consistency and color made me want to add butter. The snow was heavy at times and the cold hadn't affected us yet. Honestly, it was as good as it gets. The top of the mesa was fog ridden and we headed NE towards the tree. Chumley turned around and said, "This isn't a freakin mesa, it's a mountain!" (The tree is a bit higher than Brins Mesa) Then he turned and fought his was up through the cold and snow with a smile. Upon arriving, I panicked. WHERE WAS THE TREE!?!?!?! I have seen it in so many seasons, and storms. I told it secrets and shared beer with it. I even hugged it once, as any good long haired tree huger would. :o GONE. pumpkin x 10 :( . Anyways, the weather drama kept building and my tears kept freezing so I got into photography mode. Well after a beer then I go into photography mode. WOW the next 30 minutes were like watching a dramatic horror romantic comedy all combined. Dense fog turned to glorious warm sunshine lighting distant red rocks turned to blizzard like conditions. A manic depression low pressure system as I call it. It was AWESOME! My feet and my soul started to get cold and it really limited my artistic drive. Todd and Geoffrey had built a snowman and were having the time of their lives as I ran around framing up scenes. We all decided that we liked our feet to much to stay any longer and headed back to Oak Creek Brewing Co for a beer! Life is GOOD.
