I stopped at the McDonald's at I-17 and Carefree Highway for breakfast before heading over to Wickenburg and on to the trailhead. This was my first visit to the peak and mine, though I had wanted to go there like forever. It was a nice warm spring day...perfect! Al's group outings are more about socializing and enjoying nature than serious hiking, so it is a nice change of pace for me. Because of this I only made it about halfway to the peak (about where the 4x4 road joins the trail). This is just before the serious uphill kicks in. Some of the others in the group went all the way to the peak. The rest of us waited back at the parking area for their return, where we regrouped and decided to go back to Wickenburg for lunch at El Ranchero Restaurant (it was quite good). Then we headed back out to check out the mine. So this peak is still on my to do list. Think I might do it again in the spring when it will not be cold and I can camp nearby. |
