I got invited to join Hank and friends at Camp Grasshopper at Byous Butte just after New Years 2009. I mentioned it to a young hiking maniac friend, Jeff in Tucson, and told him I would show him some new territory up in the Sierra Anchas before heading back to camp at Byous if he was interested. He said yes, so Saturday morning we drove up to Devils Canyon. We walked a short way up the trail and I told him what an adventure it was going up to the cliff dwelling. But that was not our goal for the day. From there we headed back to the Young highway and I took him up to see the dramatic cliffs above Parker Creek to further fire him up, before heading back to the Superstitions.

All we had to do to earn a gourmet meal at Hank's Hilton was to show up with some firewood. Such a deal! :D And wow, were we treated to some great Italian food and good wine! :thanx: Happily full, we enjoyed a relaxing time around the campfire in the evening. In the morning after being treated to more good food and coffee, we bid Hank, Tom, and Gary farewell and headed back to Tucson.

Jeff was pretty impressed with the Sierra Anchas, so when I told him that a group of hikers from Phoenix were heading up to go to Devils Chasm on January 10th (lead by wallyfrack), we decided to join them. That turned out to be quite an adventure as well! Check out Wally's triplog to see what I mean.

Jeff was training for an attempt to do the Pacific Crest Trail in the spring. He had boundless energy and was hiking like a madman to get ready. We kind of lost touch with him over the months when he was on the trail, but he did let us know that he completed his quest. :) He said in some emails that being out alone like that made him do a lot of soul searching and gave him a different perspective on life. He decided to go back home to Chicago rather than come back to the desert.
