| no partners | | I had a road trip to Colorado planned with friends to do a 14er or two. Since I had severely injured my ankle just one week before, I was very dismayed to say the least. But I never like missing out on road trips (hiking is secondary), so I went anyway. We decided probably the only one I could do is Antero, since you can drive pretty close to the peak. I went up in the truck, knowing we would need it for that task. Camped near Tres Piedras, New Mexico the first night, had breakfast at the East West Grill in Alamosa, then headed up to set up camp near the peak in a FS campground (Cascade I think). Then off to the peak in early afternoon (weather was mostly mellow). Parked at upper trailhead area at about 12,000 feet, just before the switchbacks. Got hit with a passing snow shower just before the top, but weather was fair after that. Met a guy on top who was parked further up the road at around 13,200 feet, so he gave me a lift back to my truck as I was having great difficulty and pain on the descent. It was tough on that busted ankle, but glad I did it. I decided that I wouldn't be able to do anymore hiking on the trip, so parted ways with my friends the next morning after breakfast in Buena Vista and headed over to the mountains near Monticello, Utah for the third night of camping. |
