| no partners | | I've wanted to explore all of the named canyons in White Tank Regional Park for some time now. I guess this is the beginning of that project.
I took Mesquite Trail about 3.3 miles up so I could essentially hike the canyon from top to bottom. I was expecting the first half (entry to Mesquite/Willow trail junction) to be a bummer, with plants grabbing at me from all angles, but it wasn't too bad. Generally, any spot that did require blood donations could easily be avoided. I made the mistake of stepping in a batch of mud which robbed my shoes of any traction for a short ways. I slipped once and threw my hand out to catch myself and was lucky to have it land in grass and not cacti. As I got closer to the trail junction, I ended up hiking above the washes thanks to all of thick vegetation that littered the route.
The second half was familiar territory, to a point. I had attempted this a while back but had to turn back for whatever reason. This time around it was a walk in the park. A shimmy and a crawl helped avoid one tank, while another HUGE pool was quickly climbed around. From here to the big wall was your average White Tank wash stuff, with the exception of an awful ankle roll that I'll be feeling for a couple days. The big wall was easily bypassed, and all of the boulder hopping below it was good stuff. The remainder of the hike was filled with more wash shenanigans, followed by a smooth cruise back to the car, courtesy of Waddell Trail. |
