A strenuous but very rewarding hike. I went with a co-worker who had done this one before. There is a nice parking lot and even restrooms. About 1/2 mile in on the jeep road, watch for the cairn that turns East toward the mountain. This hike is very similar to Flatiron--the grade steadily increases, then gets very steep through the ravine. The top is relatively flat, and the true summit is at the Southeast end. The true summit has the red mailbox (interesting story etched on the inside) with several notebooks inside. The USGS marker is there, as well as a memorial.
The views are spectacular (see photos).
The North summit has a flag on it, as well as a small geocache and someone's remains. Be sure to go to this summit too, as it has an excellent view of the Arboretum and the town of Superior.
I probably won't be hiking for a while--right above the mine, at the last part of the steep trail, I slipped and fell into a cactus, injuring my ankle and absorbing several cactus spines I had to hobble the last mile back to the parking lot. So be on the watch at all times for slipping! |
