| no partners | | As an alternative to the normal route down
the Cave Trail one may opt to explore the so-called "back side". The Cave Trail
encounters two major rock formations along its ridge. The normal route contours
the upper portions of the ridge on the west side of these formations. The "back
side", as you may have deduced,
would skirt them to the east.
The first formation I'll call Geronimo Rock as is houses the well known cave of
the same name. It is very tricky to find where the trail begins coming down
from the top as we did. Coming up from the bottom
you will plainly see a "use" trail heading up to the right of Devil's Slide.
The next formation is "The Fortress" which is popular with rock climbers. We
were unable to complete a back side route at this point. Approaching it from
the
north it looked like a very viable route to stay high and to the left, but
right behind the Fortress we encountered a sheer drop with no obvious descent
point. Back tracking around to the front side was no treat. After taking the
normal front side we went back around from the bottom side to survey the wall
and saw no good route from that end either.
Use your imagination, have fun, and be careful. |
