We left the Valley of the Sun very early Tuesday morning on our return to our a cooler Minnesota. As we made the turn from the Bush Hwy onto the Beeline Hwy, the sun was still far off on the horizon but gave just the right light to silhouette Four Peaks and some of the other mountains along our East route. Behind us we could see the tops of thunderheads somewhere around Lake Pleasant towering above the mountains and showing streaks of lightning.
It was a beautiful pre-dawn drive up to Payson, then we made the turn onto Hwy 260 and ran straight into the rising sun It was blinding, couldn't see anything but bright spots in front of my eyes. The rest of the drive up to the Mogollon Rim country was beautiful but the lack of clouds prevented a striking sunrise.
My trip planning included a stop-off in Cuervo, New Mexico for some more shots of the Ghost Town we visited on our way out. This visit was to structures back from the "main drag" that were in serious decay. The homes had walls completely knocked down showing the construction of the walls and the lack of mortar to keep the stones in place.
The old school house is still structurally in-tact but looks unsafe. I didn't get close enough to get shots of the inside because there was signs of construction work going on around the grounds of the building. There's an old wooden plank bridge crossing a dry wash on the way to the schoolhouse that appears unsafe for even foot traffic anymore It was fun touring the old Ghost Town again and I'm sure I'll be stopping there again as we travel between our homes and family's.
We finally got back to Minnesota after two hard 14 hour days of driving to find that my once green grass is now a crisp brown. Well, that just means that I don't have much grass cutting to do and lots of lawn watering ahead. Then it's getting the house and yard ready for winter and our return to Arizona |

Wildflowers Observation Moderate Noticed lots of wild sunflowers alongside the roads, to help break up the monotony of the trip. |
