Caught the first red bus at 5am to Hermit's Rest. It was cool at the start, about 46 degrees but that didn't last long. I had shade all the way to the Tonto junction, after that it was mostly sunny save for a few narrow sections of Hermit Creek. There's quite a few new rock slides along Hermit, most of them in the Supai. They're easy to get through though. Saw a couple camped out just below Santa Maria Spring. The rest house provided a nice place to hang their food and gear, the trail seemed appropriate for their utensils and food packaging, and the bushes surrounding the RH made a great clothesline to dry their socks and underwear.
The narrow section of Hermit was the highlight of the hike but way too short. Made it to the Colorado which was looking like chocolate milk. Went back up the Creek and explored a bit and then moved on to the old camp and checked out the leftovers from the tram system. Wonder if the Navajos will be using a similar system at the confluence?
Kind of sad to see all the trash at the creek campsites but I'm reminded by others that it is the day hikers who are the most irresponsible and are destroying the canyon's wilderness feel.
The hike out was kind of a slog as the temps ratcheted up. Only saw a handful of hikers all day. |
