Afterwards I went over and said hello to The Hippy and my friend Rebekka at the Market. It was early afternoon and I was trying to think of a good short hike that I could do while there. Plateau Point came to mind. I grabbed my binoculars and my Camera to scope out Isis a little better from this side of the river. I didn't bring a ton of water since there is plenty along the way.
Once down at Indian Gardens I started heading out to Plateau Point when I saw the Tonto Trail. This would be perfect to head west on to get some good shots of Isis. Pretty soon I had gone a few miles and found a great perch to sit and gaze across the river. I looked for breaks in the rock on Isis to find a route up through the layers. Then as I was getting ready to head back I got to thinking that it would be cool to continue on the Tonto west. My plan was to go to Hermit and then exit that way and take the bus back to my car. I figured it would be an extra mile or two vs going back up Bright Angel.
I couldn't remember how long that road was to the Hermit Trailhead but I was thinking it was 3 to 5 miles from Bright Angel Lodge. So on I went. Along the way I passed several backpackers, horn creek, salt creek, monument canyon, etc. I kept going and going. I didn't realize I had 9 miles to go from where I sat and took the photos. I didn't have nearly enough water for that distance so my camel instinct had to kick in. I passed one backpacker who was out of water. She was down in Monument Canyon. She said she had a filter but was afraid to drink from the creek because of an old Uranium mine. I got down on the ground and drank straight from the stream. I told her that maybe I will have "a nice glow" the rest of the week. I think it freaked her out but I was thinking about how much I had on my back and how far I had to go.
Once I got up the Hermit to Santa Maria the sun was setting and it became a much easier go. I popped out at the Hermit TH around 9:30pm and unfortunately the bus had already stopped running. Luckily I had cell service and I phoned the Hippy for a lift back to my car at Bright Angel. If it weren't for her I probably would have been leaving the park around midnight! Thanks a bunch for the lift. Even if I did have to share it with an Elk leg.
At this point I have done the Tonto from Grandview to Hermit. |
