The first two miles up the Rim gains elevation quickly and is very tough with a full pack on; however the top of the Rim is rewarding with some amazing views.
The terrain levels out on top but wayfinding is difficult for a few miles among low trees, brambles and large boulders. Luckily, there are many cairns to help. As the trail enters the pines and it provides lots of shade with the lush foliage.
After crossing the creek a few times, we arrived at the outlet from Knoll Lake which is stunning at dusk. The outlet is a great place to camp because it cannot be reached from the roads and the campgrounds; and is considerably quieter at night as the cliffs bar the sound from the main campground. There are a few established spots along the water that provide flat ground and well-built fire pits. |
