| partners | | this hike has been on my wish list, and john kindly agreed to do it for his second time with me
it is a long way out there
got going around 6:50
trailhead was easy to find from the directions we remembered but didn't bring
a good trail ascends at a steady but moderate grade
low desert hiking at first, then along a drainage with more rocky terrain
crossing the drainage, you start up the switchbacks and head for a saddle
a final push to the summit
lots of mining stuff throughout the hike
john found a small rattler near a spring box
lots of other metal junk scattered nearby
up higher we saw quite a few tailings, but all the mines were filled in
one old camp with only flattened boards remaining
the summit area is large, with communications equipment, a couple of buildings, and some parking/picnic areas for those who drive the road up
we may have found our way into one of the buildings, an interesting cabin type structure
wandered around a bit up top, taking in the views of the surrounding mountains
headed down, stopping to look at some more tailings, and started to follow a path to another mine but decided to save that for next time
there were a lot of gnats, so we couldn't really loiter much
enjoyed the hike and john's company
i don't go west very often
have my eye on another couple of peaks out this way
had a burger and tots at don's cactus bar in salome
thanks for doing the driving john
a good peak |
