| no partners | | Got an early start at 5:45 AM and hiked up to the Windgate Pass Trail and back (2.5 miles each way). I didn't want to do the loop, and since I'm getting more fit wanted to explore what the larger network of trails looks like for future trips. The 5:45 start worked wonders, because I was shaded by the peaks for literally all but the last 100 yards or so of my hike in. The sun was out for the hike back but that wasn't a problem. Even on a weekend when temps in Phoenix reached 110, this morning in the shade it felt like 80 and there was a cool breeze to boot. I've probably found my heat-hiking solution for the summer.
The out-and-back was nice. I started by going counterclockwise on the Gateway Loop trail, but rather than looping up to the saddle I kept going straight on the Windgate Pass Trail. I stopped at the intersection of the Windgate Pass and Desert Parks trails, which is marked by an official Waypoint 3 trail sign, with directions. Next time, if I can get an even earlier start, I may keep going to Inspiration Point which was just 0.5 miles away. |
