So, my wife and I were sitting in Den Haag wondering what to do next. As the trip was a gift / dying wish from my step-mom to my wife, I wanted my wife to choose. She wasn't sure so, having seen the movie, I suggested Brugge. (I use the Dutch spelling.) She thought it was a good idea, so off we went.
We took our time, so didn't get settled into a hotel until late afternoon. Were still able to get over to the Belfry (aka Belfort) -- which featured in the movie (I'd link to a YouTube clip but pretty much the entire movie is NSFW ) -- and get in before closing, despite the long line. Made it up the 366 steps / 83m in five minutes. Could have done it faster -- thanx to all my hiking -- except the upper steps were quite narrow, and there was quite a crowd. Great views from on top, and was lucky enough to be up there when the bells sounded. Boy were they loud.
Afterwards had a Jupiler beer and frites with "joppiesaus" from a shack outside the Belfry. No idea what "joppiesaus" would be, but turned out to be a rather tasty combination of what appeared to be mayo and curry.
After the frites, we wandered around a bit before a late dinner, accompanied by a Rochefort 8 from Trappistes Rochefort. Belgium has 1500 beers, and I only have one liver. Life is not fair ...
