| no partners | | Started off the day with on a 45 minute ride around the old city on a tour bus. (It was a short bus.  ) Bummer it had closed windows, making pictures pointless. Still a good way to get a handle on where to go on foot later in the day.
After that we walked down to the Saint John of Nepomuk statue, where we hopped on a canal tour boat. (Just like Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell in "In Bruges".) It was about another 45 minutes, and our guide was pretty funny. Some of the arches were quite low, like if you were over six feet tall, you would have had to duck (video: http://youtu.be/YVFUdj_BU7s ).
Then we meandered over to the Halve Maan Brewery, as it was the only other place with tours on Monday. (All the art galleries -- which house world famous works by such as Dali, Bosch and even Michaelangelo are closed on Monday.) It was pretty cool seeing the old brewing equipment. The beer was not halve bad either. (See what I did there?) Oh, and lest I forget, they had a lot of very low doorways in the old buildings. You know where this is going. Despite being well marked, I still managed to bash one pretty good with my head. Frankly, I was surprised it didn't bleed, I hit it that hard.
Then we wandered off the beaten tourist path, but still inside the ring canal, just to see what else we might find. Eventually we ended up at the Jan van Eyck statue at the end of the Spiegelrei canal (which also featured in the "In Bruges" boat ride).
We ended the day in the hotel lounge, me enjoying a Bellevue cherry lambic beer.
One interesting observation that I had not registered on previous trips to Europe: Besides the large amount of spray paint graffiti, there is also a lot of sticker graffiti. Typically, a light pole, utility box, etc. will be done up like some 13-year old's skate board. |
