(15 euros or about $20 for 100 miles!) It was a pleasant drive on a four-lane highway, as the French countryside is so beautiful. We were heading down the motorway when I spotted an awesome bit of tourist kitsch, which you may see a lot of in America, but not so in Europe: a giant freaking pig! So, we pulled into the rest stop / gas station, and I headed over to check it out. Looked like a javelina, but it was a boar, 10m high, 14m long and weighing 55 (!) tons: Woinic.
After passing by Sedan, we got on some smaller, much twistier roads, through the Ardennes Forest. In the town of Maissin, Belgium, we stopped as I had seen some old white crosses in the forest. Turns out there was a battle there early in World War I.
At another rest stop, just northeast of Antwerp, there were some wild chickens living under the bushes.
We stayed the next two nights in Soesterberg, Netherlands. Today, my wife and I went for a ride on rented 3-speed bikes. I figured to loop to Amersfoort, then Soest, then back. My wife fell off her bike early in the ride. It was scarey, but she was unhurt. She turned back, but insisted I go on. I completed the loop despite having forgotten to bring water. There was some very large expanses of small inland dunes, which was cool. (And lent itself to actually achieving some small AEG in the Netherlands. ) |
