There was a time not that long ago now in my late 60's with my standard twenty-five pound day pack, that I could just take-off for a recommended HAZ-ssk44(Eric) off-trail "Death March" to a planned destination and "get her done"..but no longer :) Now, a combination of age catching up with me with no active & routine exercise plans, along with the true ruggedness and difficulty of some of our still seldom explored amAZing, wild, and remote off-trail destinations, has finally taught me a good lesson.. I do hope ;)

My happy to have along hiking partner for this one- Oregon Hiker(Larry) has done an excellent job of documenting our long day into the night hike in his triplog so I see no need to document those details again here. Eric who had done most all the route pre-planning for Larry & me :thanx: was most interested in our after hike findings and observations. My email to him the morning after pretty much sums up my story:

"Sorry bud to keep you in suspense.. a very long, difficult day for us, and especially for me..started at 9:15am and not back to vehicle until 7pm, one hour after dark then the difficult and slow 45 minute 4wd dive out to A-Cross Rd on secondary FR267.. not home until after 10pm and not to bed until 12am..
I finally bit off more than I could handle on this one.. our original primary planned route out/back was just not doable.. we had to go with a secondary north end ridge line up that was difficult to get too with four in/out drainage's, etc before reaching the secondary ridge line UP.. very steep, loose rocky, with some rock spree areas, a risky spine area, and crumbling rock cliffs and rock climbing, choked with nasty agave, and tons of prickley pear cactus. It was also a Hot day with full sun exposure, with nasty nats galore to deal with going up and on the way back out, I fell ~six times, left my gloves after a prickley pear extraction, ran out of water (went through 4 liters) one+ hour before reaching the vehicle but Larry had a pint to spare   . On the hike in I needed to bail-out and stop at a scenic 3415ft rock outcropping at 1:30pm about .25mi from the summit but another 450ft up to reach Blue Peak 4780ft. I yelled to Larry at 12:45pm to keep going and he did and made the summit around 1:30pm and back to my location at 3pm to begin the very risky (for me) and slow after dark difficult and mandatory GPSr navigation return.."

The bleeding has now stopped and all my cuts, puncture wounds, bruises, and sun burn are healing. I'm gratified that we correctly made all the near emergency decisions and had everything we needed to safely exit a difficult situation.

I'm now ready for another off-trail adventure, but not quite one like this.. :D
(as a side note, I noticed that my posted and minor edited GPS Route is showing the same R/T mileage distance as Larry's who actually hiked an additional ~.5ml R/T distance. I suspect the reason is partly due to my Oregon 600 laying down 5714 route points (1pt/5 seconds) vs Larry's Oregon 450 at 1502 points)
