This was another major piece of "eye-candy" during our 1-day, whirl-wind adventure near Page AZ. Jan van der Meer (visiting from the Netherlands) and I drove up to Page Saturday night staying at the local Holiday Inn Express. We caught the Sunday morning sunrise near Wiregrass Canyon as well as the bonus setting of the full moon. Encountered a herd of antelope and continued traveling on to North Coyote Buttes to catch "The Wave".
The Wire Pass Trail Head only had 1 vehicle in the parking lot. Judging from the frosty windshield I'd say those hikers spent an overnighter in Buckskin Gulch or on to the Paria River Canyon.
The 7:30am TH temperature was only 19degF making it a little nippy on the hands! Thankfully there was no wind and we quickly warmed up hiking up Coyote Buttes towards "The Wave".
This was a very unique experience having the sights all to ourselves. The stillness was almost frightening! On the way out we did encounter 3 sets of hikers, each struggling with their route finding (I hope the GPS track helps). Selecting photos was a struggle. Jan chose the 1st group of 10, I chose the 2nd group of 10.
After returning for lunch in Page, we toured Lower Antelope Canyon. On the way back to Phoenix, we stopped at the Horseshoe Bend View and even had time to stop in Flag to take Hannah out for dinner at the local Red Lobster.
How's that for packing in a full day? |
