I've been "eyeing" this hike for some time as it is listed in one of my home library books (Flagstaff Hikes by Richard & Sherry Mangum) as the authors' personal favorite hike. My curiosity was "piqued" when AimeeClimbs recently posted the hike description on HAZ...

With NAU spring break ending today, it was time to return my daughter back to the university at Flagstaff. Hannah agreed to an early Sunday start and we drove up from Phoenix arriving at the trail head around 11am. There were many omminous signs at the TH indicating permit requirements and threats posted to tow away any unauthorized vehicles. With the Peaks Ranger Station and Agassiz Lodge at Snowbowl closed, we didn't know what other options we had other than to be "lawless" and park at the TH.

The trail follows some old jeep paths over to the remains of Ludwig Veit's cabin. Remains of Jenk's cabin can also be found along with some interesting rock art near Veit Spring. We climbed over to Canadian Spring but couldn't locate any of the rock art as mentioned in Mangum's book.

With the many groves of aspen, I'm sure this would be a spectacular autumn hike. Maybe we have the excuse to return a seek out the rock art near Canadian Spring...

We had a second hike also planned for today - Kachina Trail. When we arrived back at the truck, a dark cloud rolled in producing freezing rain! We decided to abort the second hike in favour of a late lunch at Oregano's. On the drive down the mountain, we encountered a young couple who'd just spun out into the ditch! Good thing I had a shovel in the back of the truck as we were able to dig their car out and strategically place windfall branches under the wheels to act as "come-alongs". Cudos to the other 3 vehicles that stopped and helped push the car out of the ditch. Think we had the young couple on their way in less than 15 minutes...

Also found an interesting historical side note about lost loot near Veit's Cabin. Check out the link for more infohttp://www.legendsofamerica.com/AZ-Treasures2.html
