I normally would hike Wind Cave at the Usery MRP, for a good workout but it is so popular and crowded it's just hard to make any time up. Knew where Usery Mountain was located but could not find it on HAZ, but then I searched under Peaks and found Peak 2972. Thanks to FLYING_FLIVER i downloaded his route and reviewed his triplogs. When hiking alone i try to stay away from to much bushwhacking
especially during snake season. Only 2 1/2 miles to the TH off I went, the hike was mostly off trail but gave me an idea what was going on in the area, after several more hikes I found the route that gave me what I was looking for. I stayed in the wash until I connected with the old jeep or mining road and followed that to a intersection, I could follow the mining road to the left ( which becomes steep and slippery or turn right and follow a old use trail. I chose the use trail and followed it up and around to a visible trail to my left which takes you to the Mine itself ( or what used to be a mine ) You could make this a turn around point if you didn't want to continue up to the saddle and then over to the Peak. If you continue I would recommend you use poles up to the saddle is is pretty straight up with few switchbacks and very slippery and steep and worse going down. After you reach the saddle it's time for a little catch your wind break (perfect rock) and enjoy the beautiful scenery in front of you ( puts Wind Cave to shame ) head South to the Usery Mnt Peak and catch your 360 degree view, Look west if you enjoy city views, East and North for what you went up to experience. For all register lovers I placed a sign in book to record your thoughts and trips. I then headed North to the next Peak over checked out the views of Red Mnt and the Salt River and headed back down ( remember STEEP ). If it wasn't for the Gun Range you would think you was up at Flat Iron so peaceful. Please check out FLYING_FLIVER'S triplogs pertaining to Peak 2972 very informative with histories and photos. Hope you all enjoy this hike as much as I have. |
