| no partners | | My trailhead was in Trilby Wash, which I accessed off of New Castle Hot Springs Rd. Wickenburg is 11 miles to the west.
The hike was mostly on deeply rutted dirt-bike tracks that traversed many rolling hills. I actually spent alot of time hiking next to the trails for better footing. I also had to hike in a deep, narrow wash for half a mile. Hiking in a deep wash is boring - No views.
Anyway, along the way I ventured out onto some of the other intertwined trails, just to see what I could see. Those rolling hills make for interesting views. My trail wanderings make my GPS track look like it has arms.
Maricopa/Yavapai boundary marker (#15) is atop one of those rolling hills. It’s in excellent shape considering it’s just 2 feet from a dirt-bike trail. The frustum shaped marker has only suffered a few chips out of its concrete, over the past 91 years. Maybe the two large ocotillos next to it have ‘watched over it’ through the years.
Quince Triangulation Station is only 12 feet away and it’s doing fine also.
My little quest to locate these boundary markers will cease pretty soon.
I have ‘visited’ 13 of them, and I’ll visit a few more, then reevaluate whether I’ll continue. Some are impossible to visit as they’re either under water - Or gone, due to road construction. Plus, one boundary marker will have to wait until the Forest Service opens one of its rain damaged roads, so I can drive a bit closer to it.
Since the county border goes west all the way to La Paz county, it would be a long drive to locate those ‘far-west’ frustums, plus most of those far-west frustums are just sitting in the flat desert, and not much of a logistical challenge to locate. Frustums are cool, but not that cool. |
