| no partners | | Of the thirty one total Maricopa/Yavapai county boundary markers set in place in 1924, six are located between Lake Pleasant and Wickenburg. This hike was to the last of those six that I’ve located during the past many weeks. (There was a seventh frustum in this area, but ‘road widening’ destroyed it in the 1950s).
The benchmark directly associated with this sixth boundary marker is nearby, and has the interesting name of GOOGIE Triangulation Station.
I parked in a branch of Mockingbird Wash, which is in the Wickenburg Mountains. I headed basically east, going up and down a whole bunch of small little bumps and ridges, until I reached the nondescript bump that Googie Benchmark and boundary Frustum #14 are located. It appears that surveyors had erected some type of platform over Googie, as there are large wood pieces laying all over the ridge. Much more wood than the normal ‘Height of Light’ wood.
I knew this hike would be easy and a bit mundane, so I had left it for, “last of the six”.
I did this hike the day after eating way too much on Thanksgiving, so it was good that it was an easy little trek. The only other interesting thing on the hike was a windmill/corral combo that are both in great shape.
No more frustum hikes for awhile, as the Forest Service has to fix a road for me to get close to a starting point for one boundary marker, and another ‘frustum hike’ will entail a hike of over fifteen miles in unfamiliar territory. I’ll wait for late spring for the 15 miler, as there will be more daylight for the long hike.
As mentioned earlier, this actual hike was rather mundane, and the only incentive was to ‘finish what I started’ - locating all six frustums between point A and B. |
