| no partners | | Last January my ‘January-only’ hike partner and I did some rehab hikes for his hip replacement. He did great on those hikes.
Well, hike-partner-Mike is in town again (it must be January), and wants to do some more rehab hikes - This time for his other brand new hip.
Two hip replacements in a year and a half, due to a motorcycle accident. Yikes.
He’s becoming bionic.
We lucked out and stayed dry, as we did this hike between rain systems that seem to be taking turns going through Arizona. We had the trails all to ourselves for the most part. 45 degrees, humid, windy and with the threat of rain, equals ample parking at the trailhead.
As many know, the first part of the Tom’s Thumb Trail (from 128th St off Rio Verde Dr) is alot of constant ‘up’, with many switchbacks. Trail repair crews must dislike these ‘rain-waves’ we’re having, as the rains are eroding the heck out of those switchbacks. Nothing dangerous, but quite a bit of repair is needed. The rest of our travels were on the normal, good preserve trails.
In the past few years, the Scottsdale Preserve has changed the names of a few trails in this part of their system. Not a big deal, unless you tell new hikers what trails to use, and you tell them the original names.
Mike’s new hips did fine. Next hike, he wants me to plan a hike that has more miles, and more AEG.
I told him, that since he’s so demanding on ‘hike-criteria’, that I’m going to charge him double for my hike planning and hike-rehab sessions. (What’s 2 X 0) ?? |
