| partners | | We wanted to do another hike in Flagstaff and picked Elden due to the proximity and challenge of hiking up snow and ice. We started around mid-morning and the parking lot had only a few cars in it. The first half mile had very little snow and a few patches of ice. There would be more in the higher elevations. We continued on and our pace slowed as we ascended. Some sections of trail were bare earth while others areas, mostly north facing, were covered in snow and/or ice. We carefully proceeded up the trail and a few sections were sketchy but we made the summit. The last half mile was covered in packed snow. The views up top were really nice and we took a short break. From there we made the way back down the snow covered trail. The going went well as footing felt stable. Again we took our time and had careful foot placement. As we descended we started passing people on their way up. Our pace also picked up and we were back to the jeep in early afternoon. This was a great hike and I’m glad we decided to give it a go. A traction device would have helped but it wasn’t needed. |
