I visited some friends in Dalat, Vietnam and got a few hikes in while I was there. Lang Biang, at 2,167 meters (7,109 feet), is located 12 km from Dalat and a popular hiking spot. There is another peak, at 1,929 meters, which a radar station sits on and is a popular destination for tourists because you can pay and ride in a jeep all the way up to the top. Lang Biang can only be accessed by foot.

We got there by motorbike, which is the most popular transportation in Vietnam, a land where traffic is ridiculously insane and rules or lanes are mere suggestions. Navigating through huge traffic circles with cars, motorbikes, and pedestrians coming in all directions and driving on the wrong side of the road against traffic or on the sidewalk are simply the norm. It's truly amazing how it just works itself out among the seemingly insane chaos. No road rage and I didn't see any accidents the two and a half weeks while I was there in different cities.

Most ride the jeeps to the top of the other peak where the radar station is at. Hikers of Lang Biang mostly hike the 3.5-km narrow windy jeep road to get to the actual TH. We struggled a little bit to find a lesser known trail that would allow us to avoid hiking the jeep road to get to the TH, but we found it after a few minutes. It was safe and much more scenic. And no crazy jeeps roaring and narrowly missing and passing us at 50 mph! It took us through some pretty fields where horses were roaming and pine forest with steep grades as we climbed up to the TH.

After we paid the fee and started the actual trail, the first part was pretty flat and leisurely. Soon we got into really dense jungle with some downfalls to navigate over. The last 1,000 feet or so of the elevation gain, they pounded these planks into the dirt to build these steep "stairway" from hell. I wasn't sure whether it would be easier without the "stairs"? The summit view was pretty and the weather was great. The city of Dalat and adjacent mountain ranges were in clear view. We hung out on the summit for about 30 minutes before heading back down. It was a pretty and leisurely hike. Alli had done it 6 or 7 times and it was a perfect warm up for her for the Fansipan to come a week later. We took our time enjoying the different scenery.
