Followed game trails to a drainage that leads up the north side of the mountain. The drainage opened up near a saddle then I headed South 'off-trail' towards the peak. Reached a rocky outcrop which I thought was the peak. After a few rock climbing moves found out I was wrong. False peak #1. Resumed my upward path to the next rocky ledged summit. False peak #2. This time I had to pick my way across a narrow fin (less than 3 feet at times, with some exposure). Reached the actual peak just before 8am. Incredible views of Auger Canyon, Nutrioso and much more.
Dropped down from the summit off the south end which was much easier. No sketchy exposure. Once off the rocky peak, the terrain is very steep. Scree in spots was a challenge. Kept myself upright and leaning backwards towards the steep slope. At about 8500 feet the slope is easier to deal with, then I could hop and run my way down.
NOTE: Found more raspberries on this hike at about 8800 feet. Not as many bushes as hike from yesterday. |
