| no partners | | Bagging this easy peak was definitely a pleasant and unexpected surprise. Despite the many great places I’ve been to, tons of awesome peaks I’ve bagged in 2016, and other unexpected good things to come my way in life, it still feels in certain regards like a dark cloud is hanging over me / like an ‘evil spell’ needs to be broken. My recent two week rest from hiking [and any physical activity for that matter] did nothing to fix the exhaustion I’d been experiencing, and it’s been over four weeks since I’ve had any further improvements with my equilibrium. Add some financial setbacks to the mix [which are very unusual for me] and just the thought of racking up more mileage on my leased Forester by driving 30+ miles one-way to the nearby Sierritas put me in a bad mood…
…thus, I decided I would simply go for a walk in the beautiful Hunter’s Access area, [under 5 miles one-way from my front door], with the intent of hopefully bagging a peak on my list of peaks to hit up in this area… [all of which are also on my sub-list, ‘DON’T TRY THIS DURING SNAKE SEASON…’]
Despite a racing heart and extreme lethargy that resulted in a not-so-respectable average of just under 20 minutes per mile for the first two miles of dirt road, I decided to push onward and give the peak a go. As I got closer, the areas I was concerned about based on the topo contours looked completely doable, but there were still some spots that might prove ugly. Needless to say, [especially after my ‘luck’ lately], I was pleasantly surprised at just how *easy it proved to be. [* “Easy” discounting the minor struggles I experienced due to my equilibrium still being somewhat pumpkined up, along with the many stops I needed to take during the ascent to pour water over my body to stop my racing heart, that is]. |
