Given the rather stormy weather, I opted for a couple of short peak bags over something longer in the event things got nasty… luckily it didn’t [at least not at the lower elevations; although Rincon Peak & Mt. Wrightson looked like they took quite a pounding].
First I decided to go for Sentinel Butte, a little ‘molehill’ sitting under 3,400’ at the base of the Rincons, just under 5 miles almost due South of Tanque Verde Peak. However, the few cutover dirt roads I’d planned to take did not pan out, [which was no surprise given how residential of an area it was, relative to the more remote locations I’m accustomed to hiking]; and aside from a handful of parking areas along the dirt potion of Pistol Hill Road that were too far for my liking, I didn’t see many good pullouts… unless you count the super sandy washes, that is! In fact, [with practically no large rocks & no deep sand], even a low clearance vehicle could’ve pulled right in and had no trouble.
The wash I parked in for Sentinel Butte worked out in more ways that one. In addition to being a very sweet parking spot, it also made for a beautiful little bush[less]whack, as I simply proceeded to head down the wash, which was literally almost as wide as a small freeway in many places. It was very beautiful and relaxing to say the least.
After about a mile of bush[less]whacking in the wash, I came out on the dirt road that would lead me right to the base of Sentinel Butte. From that point, it was only about 1/3rd of a mile up the dirt road, and then just over 1/10th of a mile of super easy off-trail to the small summit. Despite not even reaching an altitude of 3,400’, the little bit of elevation that is gained relative to the surrounding area offered some surprisingly nice views. And the mist/clouds from the rainy weather that lingered most of the day made for some really sweet views of the Rincons. |
