| no partners | | Wanted to do one of the 'lesser traveled' hikes when we got to Yellowstone, so found Avalanche Peak. My friend Sylvia and I didn't have bear spray (there is absolutely NO WAY to mail it to yourself there, and I didn't want to spend another $80 on more and then have to leave it there! ), so she was very freaked out about this hike. We ran into a sweet young couple on their honeymoon in the parking lot, and we were the only 4 on the trail the entire time!! After about 200 feet or so, I could tell their pace wasn't going to work for me, so since Sylvia found some new company, I grabbed some rocks to bang together to make noise and hoofed it upward. There was an awesome tree that had fallen, and I decided to go behind it for a pit stop, then had the scheming idea to wait there for them and RARRRRRRRRRRRR poor unsuspecting Sylvia. I waited about 10 minutes or so for them to get up there, and even though I didn't know the couple, I scared the living daylights out of all of them! Man was it hilarious!!!!!!!
Anywhoo, then I took off again, and when we got to the peak, I noticed that a trail kept going, even though that was the 'official' turn around point. Since I had to wait for the rest of the crew, I decided to explore going down that and going up to the adjacent peak. Man was I glad I did, even though that downhill in between was very treacherous! The views from that adjacent peak were way better, as you could see a lake and some cool meadows. Then I noticed a very faint trail kind of sliding down a bunch of shale and then a very faint trail through the woods that lead back to the main trail back. So I hollered over to the group and told them I'd meet them down there. Instead of tredging back the way I came, I slipped and slid down the shale and spent a little time on my butt. Got down to the bottom finally, and you know how things look so apparent from a bird's eye view, but when you get down to it somehow it almost disappears??? Hate when that happens! Eventually I bushwhacked my way back and found the main trail. Through all that treacherous downhill sliding and route finding, I still managed to get back to the trail before them. We hiked the way down together and I got to know the nice couple that I made crap their pants. |
