I wanted a summit hike with some good stretches of trail and/or dirt that would allow me to go on auto-pilot mode at faster pace while logging double digit mileage. This little peak fit the bill perfectly. Ironically though, 90+% of the segment of Arizona Trail between Harshaw Road and FR 138 is in really pooey condition [TONS of loose rock :next: high ankle twisting potential]. Since part of this segment was a repeat for me from a few months back en route to Kunde Mountain, I had hoped to kick the pace in to high gear, but my mile splits would not budge below the 23-25 minute range, [even on the return trip when I found myself racing the setting sun]. Ironically, I had a much easier time, [and probably went much faster] during the mile or so of bushwhacking from the base of Candelerio Peak back to the Arizona Trail. While I split just over 48 minutes/mile for this segment, the time includes an immediate stop once I reconnected with the Arizona Trail to do some MAJOR de-weeding, [at least 10 minutes per sock], plus another several minutes to find my tweezers and do a layer change. Although there wasn’t much thorny vegetation, the bushwhack involved traversing through several areas of thick grass; and the killer was having to slip under a barbed wire fence in an area that was filled with some of the most clingy types of weeds that Southern Arizona has to offer… second to none in terms of most annoying to remove, aside from possibly the good old “Velcro weeds.”

Weeds and less than ideal trail footing aside, I had an incredible time. The Patagonia Mountains are very beautiful, and the scenery is truly spectacular from start to finish; not just on the peak. In terms of wildlife, [aside from ordinary looking birds]: I saw a neat, bright green colored praying mantis right on the trail within the first mile; and shortly after departing from the peak, [as I was bushwhacking toward a small brushy drainage], I inadvertently scared the living feces out of a medium-sized javelina. Luckily it bolted away from me.
