| no partners | | On several occasions I have seen Four Peaks in the distance while on another hike or while driving or riding by. I have always been captivated by it, and it was time to get a little closer. We took 87 to Four Peaks Road (FR 143). FR 143 was a wild ride for about 20 miles--so wild that we ran the truck into the side of a cliff while negotiating a tight turn w/ a drop-off to the left and a cliff to the right and bottomed out on one occasion. Mind you, we were attempting to drive cautiously: the road is simply narrow, winding, and rough. A high clearance vehicle is a must and AWD/4WD is highly recommended. Upon getting on the trail, life smoothed out , quite literally. While areas of the trail are beginning to get overgrown, the trail does have a nice grade to it. We hiked from the trailhead to Black Bear Saddle, where we scrambled up a little "hump" to break for lunch and soak up the views of Four Peaks, up close and personal. We turned around after lunch and headed back the way we came.
This hike ranges from about 5700 - 6100 feet, but there are several areas where you go up and down, so it is more strenuous than the impression given by such a minimal spread of elevation. You hike through Oaks, and some Ponderosas, and lots of Manzanitas will scratch at your legs! Also, look out for Tarantulas--my dad almost stepped on one! This was a very nice hike--like an excellent appetizer before the main course of summiting one, some, or all of those Four Peaks! |
