Hike Description as posted from 10-16-2000 to 05-16-2003

This was an unexpectedly awesome trail. I'm not sure how I passed this one up in the past. Starts out like sections of Boynton Canyon with manzanita lined paths that are long and straight. The scenery gets better as you go. Wide open views of the surrounding area reminded me of Brins Mesa. The trail gradually ascends just past the two mile mark. You are greeted by Alligator Junipers at the 2.1 mile mark which junctions with the David Miller crosscut trail.

This may be a good turnaround point for a day hike, but I can't imagine heading back yet. The trail goes down a bit, in, out and around the contours of the red rock. There is an awesome section of river carved red rock shortly after the junction. Further in takes you past a nice slot with a waterfall. This could be fairly awesome if the creek is running. Was dry on this trip but got me excited like being at the Jug in Salome Creek. Not exactly part of the trail though. So you'll have to keep peeking to your left.

Those that push on will find out the secret of this canyon. Basically it's just beautiful, and closes in on you. I dropped the trail and decided to follow the canyon. Glad I did because it was awesome. Beware of thick poison ivy in the streambed. Pine trees smelled exactly like those on the Four Peaks, but there's no red rock up there! The canyon had a couple beautiful chokes like Lower Pumphouse Wash. Sycamores in the creekbed reminded me of Campaign Creek in the Superstitions near Reavis School. I turned around near the four mile mark, because I was low on water and out of film. Someday I will return to finish the trail and explore the side canyons.
