| partners | | I wasn't really excited about another trip to the Sycamore Rim Loop and we had penciled in a summit of Bill Williams on Sunday, so I decided to draw up an exploratory route around the hazfest camp area.
We started by climbing Hill One which offered surprising views back down to camp before heading over to Hill Two, which shouldn't even qualify as a 'hill'. Next was Hill Three, the biggest climb of the trio, which also had rewarding views from the top and featured a huge bull elk along the way.
From Three we headed downhill passing Hitt Spring, but opting to skip Perkins Tank and Perkins Knoll by getting a short stretch of road walking in instead. Next we headed for Frog Tank where we were able to follow an old road down canyon for a ways before following elk and cattle paths across a wide meadow leading to JD Cabin and grave.
From here we turned toward Sunflower Flat and decided to take the short option on the day by skipping the loop around White Horse Lake by heading to the southwest and returning to camp. Thunder was booming as we arrived, but the rains held off for a few minutes.
This was a nice little loop to explore the area. The forest here is very forgiving to off-trail travel and only for a short stretch on the north slope of Hill Three did we have any brushy obstacles to work through. Good day! Thanks lindaagm and the_n for taking a chance on a route I had told them nothing about! |
