| A great weekend in the pines and prairies of the western Mogollon Rim!
Friday was a great day followed by an introductory fire for the Friday arrivers. Clear skies allowed me to see a handful of really nice Perseids light up the sky.
Saturday a few others arrived and went on a bunch of different hikes. Saturday afternoon, the skies opened up in what can really only be called biblical rain. I could easily see 3" in containers near camp, and radar estimates when I got home indicated 5"-6" may have fallen.
Most of us were already back at camp under the tarps, but outdoor_lover and nonot were still out on the Sycamore Rim somewhere. Oregon_Hiker was also not back but we had passed him on a hike earlier in the day so I had an idea where he might be and when it started to hail, I got in my truck to head out to find him. Dodging hail and lightning strikes, he was sending me SPOT "ok" messages and I was looking up his location on my phone via the coordinates he was sending as he was making his way back toward camp. It wasn't long before his path crossed a road and I was there to get him out of the weather. The other two arrived back a little bit later and we all proceeded to clean up and dry off after the storm. A few folks had gear failures and opted to head home for a dry night, while a couple of others arrived to socialize for the evening.
Protections had been put in place, so despite the rain it was no problem getting the fire going, and despite some nuisance sprinkles we sat around the fire into the wee hours. Somebody made fun of my umbrella but then was happy I had a second one to loan out. Also, lobster bisque is delicious.
Sunday was spent hiking again, before returning to camp for the final tear down and a nap as another afternoon rain shower moved through. All-in-all a really fun weekend! It was great to meet so many new people and spend time with those I've met previously. I think there were 21 when it was all said and done.
Special thanks to Oregon_Hiker who was in camp early and able to claim the site for our group. |
