I have on my bucket list to complete the AZT so I had to start somewhere and this was it. I was hiking North to South but actually ended up starting 2 miles North of the actual trailhead. The random directions of unmarked right turn about 3 mi. down the road led to the trail but I think is was the last two miles of section #30. No biggie. Started hiking about 11AM, ran into a nice couple of ladies and their dog about 1/2 a mile in. Ran into another nice lady and her dog after crossing through one of the campgrounds. And that would be the last human I saw for the next three days. Section #29 was a beautiful hike. Stopped by Navajo Spring and topped off one of my water bottles. Good, clear water. I literally filled it up at the faucet. Strange. I did filter it through my Sawyer. Filled up again at Van Deren Spring. The water was surrounded by reeds so I had to wade in a little. As a result the water had a good amount of gunk in it but tasted ok through the Sawyer inline. I ended up hiking about 12.5 miles the first day and finished it up the next morning. Thanks for a great start.
Water in both the lower and upper tanks. Surrounded by reeds so it required getting the feet wet. Not sure of the fill rate as I just dunked my bottles. Water was a little chunky but filtered just fine
