| no partners | | Continuing my search for the elusive Cosmic Ash Tray, I followed the 4Runner GPS to Escalante, Utah to a trailhead I assumed would lead me there. I discovered the vehicle GPS was unreliable in Grand Staircase, ended toddling off down Harris Wash with a Garmin Oregon 750t. I downloaded a route posted on the internet by Hiking Gal (?) and had a reliable coordinate for the massive pot hole. Getting there from Harris was a trial for low vision, even with the support of two keen-eyed companions. We post-holed through lots of FeMg colored sand. I'm still shaking out of the Altra Lone Peaks, a poor choice of footwear for the terrain. The hematite - Montmorillionite concretions, lusciously oxidized, was the best part of the hike. I know now that I must find a GPS geared for declining eyesight if I want to get where I'm intending to go. Any suggestions?

Autumn Foliage Observation Isolated
There was color in Kanab, trees edging toward gold. By Escalante, the leaves were gone. I was content to drink in that Juniper scent I associate with slickrock elevations. |
