We started at Ajo with 5 vehicles loaded with folks who frequent this and another website. A great morning drive through the Bates and Growler mountains as we wound our way along the road. In quite good shape and weather couldn't be better, later it was shorts and tank top and sunscreen needed.
We stopped at various points of interest or to take short hikes as a group or individual. Papago mine, some water tank route finding via Topo or GPS. Some ambling at the lava flow and a few scattered flowers at Pinta Sands, we were too early, I've seen acres of sand verbena and primrose there in the past. Our first nights camp was at Tule Well; one in our group brought a telescope and we looked at Saturn's rings and moon craters. Pretty neat. Next day we drove a short distance then hiked in the Tule and Cabeza Prieta mountain area, in the rugged granite.
Several stops at some of the known memorials for the scattered gravesites in the area. Drive across the Lechuguilla desert then to the historic Tinaja Altas tanks area. We camped night two in the same name pass in a great level bowl surrounded by jagged mountains. Great campfire and camraderie in our group.
Drive out day three through this pass pioneered in late 1700's by explorer Juan Bautista de Anza; along the western face of the Tinaja Altas and Fortuna mountains toward Yuma. We stopped in at the massive Fortuna mine, where we broke up and some stayed and some went as we were very close to Yuma. I took a lot more pics than I thought along with a blurry fox telephoto. Wish I had a tripod at times, and wish I had and knew how to use photoshop. But I don't and as usual my pics are just to commemorate another great trip.
Oh, and trip distance is about 125 miles ---
