From Willow Creek camp area took the Iron Creek trail to the same name creek, a gorgeous brook in a pine forest, then on down the West Fork trail through Cooper Canyon and the "rain forests" of the Gila down to the site of the West Fork corral. It was early and after a nap we humped it up two miles to Stove Spring to camp. It was still early but I just couldn't get myself out of first gear on the uphills. We had a very nice camp at elevation, near 8K. Next day up early and followed the near non existent in spots Jerky mountain trail, nice views, and relying quite a bit on Shawn's GPS. Lots of deadfall on the trail. I was still poking along that day too but it was nice to have the two guys along on this trip. We had some early thunderboomers and a little shower. We missed the trail and I think the trail was rerouted in comparison to TOPO. No matter, we got back to Turkeyfeather creek just below the pass via the GPS. The only wildlife we saw were two elk sitings. Lots of deer on the drive in thru Mule Creek tho.
Early again to a camp by Iron Creek but it was just too nice there to pass it up. It was cloudy and threatening but no real difficult weather. It was warm and humid, and very nice at night.
We had a short hike out Sun am and then a longer wait at the cafe in Glenwood for breakfast that was pretty good and hit the spot.
Nice trip with a couple of good guys. |
