Jim asks passerbys for 5 min of their time to help remove man-made debris from the area. I came away impressed that 1) there is so much broken glass on the ground that you night not notice and 2) some people are willing to take on a task like this - apparently this has been going on for years.
As Joe describes in the hike description the spur trail at sign post 23 is a nice route up to the ridgecrest and from there it's a pretty quick drop into Hidden Valley. I headed up the trail toward Fat Man's Pass and the highlight of the day. I've looked at that narrow crack several times and bypassed it every time. But inspired by OhOh7's recent revelation that he squeezed through http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN= ... XT=T#17132, I decided to give it a try. As a result I hereby make the bold claim to be the most massive individual (225lbs) to succeed in this risky endeavor. I expect challengers wont let this be the end of it.
Flushed with success I continued on up the National Trail (rather than looping back to the trailhead), past Buena Vista, down the Corona Loma Trail and across the flats to my house. Only other thing worth mentioning is that a few hundred yards from the red roofs I came across a "coyote party". I've heard these many times on the flats in South Mountain Park but this is the first time I could see them - 4 or 5 making quite a racket. |
