| no partners | | First time exploring the Olallie Lakes area, really wasn't sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by how remote and scenic the area felt. Really didn't have a destination in mind when I set out- just wanted to see as many lakes as I possibly could in the short time that I had.
Hit the trail a bit before 6pm. It was mostly sunny but still just a bit chilly with a breeze. The trail climbs gradually as it passes more lakes and ponds than I could ever possibly count. Paused at most of the named lakes to take some pictures and cast a line before moving on to the next. I considered camping up near Upper Lake, but it was very breezy and the ground was either still covered in patches of snow, or it was covered in pool of snowmelt, so I opted to head north and drop down to lower elevation in search of a campsite.
Ran into a group of 4 or 5 guys at the PCT/Red Lake Junction who were out for their first night of a 3 night trip. Had a brief chat before I took off towards Red Lake, racing the setting sun to find a camp. Ended up finding a very nice site that was mosquito free along the shores of Wall Lake so I settled down for the night. Stayed up until a bit after 11pm with a campfire and then retired to bed.
It was mostly overcast all night and the stars were scarcely visible. Didn't get much sleep and was out of bed at 0445 and on trail just after 0500. Made my way down to Red Lake to see the last couple of lakes on the far west end of the trail, and then headed back to the trailhead. It was super cloudy and there was fog rolling over lakes. |

| no partners | | | Quick hike into Lower, Fish, and Middle Lakes before officially starting my overnight trip. Very pretty area. Landed a single rainbow trout at Middle Lake. There was an obnoxious group of campers hooting and hollering on the far shore of Fish Lake so I didn't linger very long there, but otherwise I had the whole area to myself. |
