I went on this hike with my son. My wife and daughter dropped us off at the Doe Mountain trailhead and then headed off to go horseback riding. We headed up just ahead of a fairly large group. Our start was rather late at 11:00 AM. Even for March that puts the sun a little too high and makes for a little more heat than is comfortable. On the bright side, we had more than enough water.
On our way up about half of the large group passed. We were pacing ourselves. This is an 1800 vertical foot climb to an altitude well above 6,000 ft. There's no reason to waste our energy so early into the hike. About two-thirds of the way up, just before we hit the slick rock, we passed most of the group that had charged past us earlier in the ascent. We went right past them and never saw them again.
We arrived at the top at 1:15 PM. We had lunch and took in the many great views to be had from this lofty perch. Then we headed down. The descent was my time to snap photos. So we weren't much faster going down than we were going up. We arrived at the bottom at 3:55 PM and waited for my wife and daughter to pick us up. After a half hour my son called my wife and she said they had just gotten off of the horses. She also said that they were at Camp Verde!!! OK, so we'll wait another 45 minutes, right? About 5:30 PM I called and asked her where she was and she said they were on their way back and were in Cottonwood!!! Finally, at 6:00 PM she picked us up. I think we'll plan this a little differently next time. Nevertheless, we had a great time on this hike. |
