There is a little more parking walking distance away on the south side of the road. Nice little climb but worth it before dropping into the lake basin. Pretty lakes. With a small snow year we saw no snow left shady sides or not. I recommend hiking up the hill to the north passed the lakes to the old mine site. Conflicting stories on how the silver mine did but interesting none the less. I read this was once called Dana City and one of the biggest mines in Yosemite. The mines in the area were what got the wagon road built from Crane Flat over Tioga road. The entrances even had tolls way back when... If your not interested in the mine stuff the views of the lakes and basin are great from the mines vantage point. You can make a little loop around the basin and check out Granite lakes also. Nice little hike with Kelly and John.
Side note. John pointed out our first bear around Mammoth Lakes turn off on the way in. |
