But I invoke the Edmund Hillary rationale for doing Everest. It was there. And, after all, it offers a great unobstructed view of the west Valley from the south side of the Gila River. Providing you have the patience to scramble through scree and loose rock, grabbing in near desperation to the occasional embedded rock or creosote bush.
There must be an easier way to reach the Robbins summit (el 1,179') than the straight-up route MJ and I took from the parking lot on the south side. Two steps up, one back almost all the way. And coming down was no picnic either, taking twice as long as the ascent. Little evidence of anyone being on the summit before us, but I read an account of someone doing this trek at night. Fool. Not much activity on this holiday, though the area seems popular for shooters seeking target practice. When we arrived we found a couple searching for brass shell casings, to sell, I assumed. Access from 85 is OK for cars, though lots of wash-board dirt road and a large dry wash to navigate. |
